Functional Areas

The Botswana Police Service operates with three functional areas namely; Operations, Crime Investigations and Support Services.

OPERATIONS

The Operations pillar is responsible for front line policing including police visibility and response to reports. It is made up of; Anti- Stock Theft, Operations and Traffic  Branches as well as five policing Divisions (North Central, North West, North, South and South Central).

 

Anti-Stock Theft Branch

The Branch’s mandate is to manage stock-theft crime with the intention of ensuring the security and protectio of livestock. The Branch is also responsible for strengthening cooperation between the BPS and farmers in the fight against stock theft.

North Central Division

The Division consists of four policing Districts; No. 2 (Serowe), No. 8 (Letlhakane), No. 10 (Selebi Phikwe) and No. 16 (Mahalapye), 18 Police Stations and 90 Police Posts. It polices areas covering diamond mines in the Orapa and Letlhakane, Botswana International University of Science & Technology (BIUST) and Morupule Power Stations in Palapye amongst others.The Division covers some border gates with South Africa and  Zimbabwe.

Northern Division

The Division is made up of two Districts; No. 1 (Kutlwano- Francistown),  and No. 15 (Francistown) with a total of 12 Police Stations and 90 Police Posts. It polices  areas covering Makgadikgadi Salt Pans and some border gates with Zimbabwe.

It polices  major tourism sites such as Okavango Delta, Chobe and Nxai Pans National Parks, Moremi Game Reserve as well as some boarder gates with Angola, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Operations

The Branch’s mandate is to ensure effective deployment of resources by operational establishments; implementation of standardised operational policies, processes and procedures within the organisation; smooth flow of communication among operatives at national level including dispatches to distress calls; crime recording and analysis; and coordination and promotion of all crime prevention programmes. The Branch is based at Botswana Police Headquarters in Gaborone.

The Unit is an integral part of the Botswana Police Service. It was established in 1995 as a central point of contact for all Crime Prevention Services provided by the BPS throughout the country.

Roles of the Unit

  • To prepare annual statistical returns of all crime reported and investigated throughout the country.
  • To disseminate information on crime prevention programmes, strategies and best practices through workshops and seminars.

South Central Division

The Division is made up of three Policing Districts; No. 3 (Gaborone), No. 12 (Mochudi) and No. 13 (Mogoditshane), 13 Police Stations as well as 35 Police Posts. The Division policies an estimated population of 631, 724 and covers three border gates with South Africa. The Division polices the capital city of Gaborone and the populated urban village of Mogoditshane.

Sourthern Division

It policies Jwaneng Diamond mine, Botswana Meat Commisssion, Khutse Game Reserve, Mabuasehube National Park, Trans Kalahari Fontier Park (TKFP) and Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) which are some of the major contributors to the socio economic status of the country.It also covers the Trans Kalahari Corridor (TKC) that connects the three countries of Botswana, South Africa and Namibia. The Division also covers some border gates with South Africa.

Cyber Forensics

Air Support Branch

The Branch provides airborne surveillance and patrol support in the fight against crime. It supports law enforcement operations during emergencies such as flood rescue, search for missing persons, hot pursuits, tracking of criminals and public disorder operations.

International Enforcement Academy (ILEA)

ILEA Gaborone was established through a joint initiative between the governments of Botswana and the United States of America. It provides training to law enforcement agencies in Africa.

The Institution focuses on advanced leadership and the legal/ policy frameworks necessary to facilitate effective law enforcement within the parameters of basic human rights. Areas of speciality include but not limited to counter-terrorism, narcotics interdiction, fraud, money laundering and cybercrime.

Special Support Group (SSG)

This is a para-military Branch of the Botswana Police Service established support operational functions of the organisation. Its main duties are to maintain public order and repress internal disturbances, border security,VIP protection, Anti-poaching and rescue operations.

The Branch has the following Units:

Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT)

Responsible for the handling of hostage situations

44 CESS

Provision of assistance to units responsible for;

  • Protection of high profile persons (VIPs),
  • Mineral escorts,
  • Handling of dangerous animals and
  • Funeral service undertaking to fallen heroes and/ or their spouses.

Specialised Unit

  • Ivory smuggling

Provision of specialised skills development, tactical and continuation of training to all members of the Branch.

Anti-Poaching Unit

Carries out anti-poaching operations

Police Band

Responsible for performing at ceremonial events and any event sanctioned by authorities. The Unit has both dance & brass bands and traditional dance troupe. The services are available to the public at a fee.

Peace Keeping Mission

The rendering of specialised policing services to neighbouring countries in accordance with agreements reached between Botswana and regional/ international bodies in order to restore any perceived situation to normalcy.

Strategy Development and Performance Monitoring

The Branch oversees all strategy related activities and facilitates the strategic direction of the organisation; this involves strategy formulation, strategy execution, monitoring and evaluation.

The main function of the branch is to ensure performance improvement through the appropriate application of strategy management protocols.  The other area within the SDPM Branch is Public Relations Unit which is responsible for performing a wide array of public relations activities instrumental in moving law enforcement from a closed to a more open system of communication.
